Pandemic of the 1770s

Description: stories with Richard Hart (Zoom). Richard will talk about the smallpox pandemic of the late 1770s and how it affected tribes in the Pacific Northwest (an estimated 75%of the population of most tribes was lost, perhaps more). This dramatically affected the subsistence practices of the tribes and relations of the European traders/trappers when they arrived in the early 19th century. Two of the tribes affected were the Methow, for whom our valley is named, and the Sinixt (sometimes called Lakes) whose territory stretched from Kettle Falls to Revelstoke along the Columbia River.
